Key takeaways

  • The bottle's label should name the source, not a brand story: CDTs, Canna-Botanical Strains, botanical strains, natural flavors and isolates are different products, and a good supplier tells you plainly which one you are buying.
  • Synthetics, odorizers and hidden flavoring are the market's biggest risks: Sharp chemical aromas, added volatile sulfur compounds and candy-smelling strain profiles all signal a supplier worth walking away from.
  • Documentation separates real suppliers from resellers: Ask for COAs on every lot, Safety Data Sheets, residual solvent, pesticide and heavy metal testing, plus cGMP, HACCP and allergen statements.
  • A huge CDT list from a young company rarely adds up: Keeping hundreds of cannabis cultivars in production takes years of infrastructure, so an enormous new CDT catalog is often mostly botanicals.
  • Vape formulations need clean supporting ingredients: The CUT®, The BASE™, The THICK™ and The CLEAR™ solve crystallization, viscosity and darkening without PG, VG, PEG, MCT, vitamin E acetate, squalene or squalane.

If you've bought terpenes wholesale, you've probably heard the stories or lived them. A strain that smells like candy because somebody hid flavoring in it. A "cannabis derived" profile that is mostly botanicals. A reorder that smells different from the last one. A supplier out of stock the week you need to fill carts, or a support inbox nobody answers.

The online terpene market grew fast, and quality didn't always keep up. This is our playbook on where to buy terpenes online: what the product categories actually are, the questions to ask a supplier, the red flags to walk away from, and the green flags to look for.

Where Can I Buy Terpenes?

Search "where to buy terpenes" and you get a page full of suppliers, old and new, all saying they're the best. Sorting out what each one actually sells takes work.

Lab Effects has been supplying lab operators since 2012, and we started most of the product categories in this guide. Every supplier praises itself, though, so here is what to look for in any supplier, us included. The best place to buy cannabis derived terpenes is a supplier that:

  • Controls its own high-quality cultivars
  • Runs a first-pass extraction focused on terpenes, separate from cannabinoid extraction
  • Holds a consistent quality standard year after year, proven by third-party audits
  • Keeps a large inventory, so supply is there when you need it
  • Answers the phone and knows the chemistry

A supplier that meets all five takes most of the risk out of buying wholesale terpenes.

Know What You're Buying: Types of Terpenes

"Terpenes" covers a lot of different products. Before you buy terps online, know what is actually in the bottle. A good supplier names its products plainly, with no obscure brand names. It tells you the source, the contents, how the product was made and what it's for.

Here's how we break down our catalog:

Cannabis Derived Terpenes

CDTs are the actual essential oil of a cannabis cultivar, extracted from Cannabis sativa L. Because they come from the plant itself, they carry the terpenes plus the other aromatic compounds in that flower, and that is what makes them smell like the cultivar on the label. Our CDTs contain no cannabinoids, and we carry the largest CDT portfolio in the market, more than 115 strains. If you want True-to-Flower™ aroma, buy cannabis derived terpenes.

CDT Aroma Boosters

Cannabis base aromas, gas, skunk, fruit, earth and floral, for building up the nose of a product.

Botanical Derived Strains

BDTs rebuild a cannabis cultivar's profile using isolated terpenes from other plants, fruits, flowers and herbs, matched to GC/MS analysis of the real strain. They cost less, and they are compliant everywhere as long as they are natural. Lab Effects brought the first analytically matched botanical cannabis strains to market in 2012, and we now offer more than 100.

Canna-Botanical Strains

A category we created. Canna-Botanical Strains start with a cannabis derived base and add botanical terpenes to match a specific strain. They give you real cannabis character at a lower price than pure CDTs, which makes them the go-to for scaling.

Natural Terpene Flavors

Botanical terpenes blended with other natural flavor components to match fruits, candy, desserts, drinks and more. They are built for beverages, edibles and carts aimed at a wider audience.

Flavor Enhanced Strains

A strain profile with a natural flavor added on purpose, like real watermelon on Watermelon OG or cantaloupe on Cannalope Haze. Anything with flavoring in it goes in this category, labeled as flavor enhanced. We don't hide flavoring inside a strain profile to make a cultivar smell like candy.

Isolated Botanical Terpenes

Single-molecule terpenes, steam distilled from plants. Common ones like myrcene, limonene and humulene, and rarer ones like bisabolol, borneol and geraniol. Buy terpene isolates to build a custom profile from scratch or to adjust one you already have.

Therapeutic Terpene Blends

Botanical formulations that combine terpenes chosen for specific wellness goals. We carry the widest range of these in the industry.

Water Soluble and Flowable Powder Terpenes

Liquid and powder formats that mix straight into drinks, gummies and dry blends.

Ask the Right Questions Before You Buy

Call a supplier before you buy cannabis terpenes online. How they pick up the phone tells you a lot. Here's what to ask:

Will you build custom formulations? An off-the-shelf profile isn't always the right fit, and your line will change. Ask whether they blend to order.

Do your products meet the rules in my markets? Every state and every country is different. Your supplier should know the rules where you sell.

Can you send full compliance documentation? Certificates of Analysis, Safety Data Sheets and test results for residual solvents, pesticides and heavy metals should come without a fight.

What are your lead times, and what happens when you're short? A supplier that runs out mid-season leaves you empty too. Ask about inventory and how fast orders ship.

Will the next batch match this one? Ask how they keep a profile consistent from lot to lot, and what testing proves it.

Red Flags When You Buy Terps

Synthetic flavorants sold as terpenes. Synthetics usually have a sharp, chemical smell and an artificial bite. Several states are moving to ban synthetic terpenes, and a lot of suppliers still sell mostly synthetics.

Added odorizers and sulfur compounds. Some suppliers boost a gas or skunk nose with industrial odorizers, "flavorants" or added volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs). Ask directly whether any of these are in the bottle.

Flavoring hidden in a strain. If a cannabis profile smells like candy, ask whether flavoring was added. It should be labeled.

Bad vape additives. Walk away from anything with squalene, squalane, vitamin E acetate, MCT, PEG or PG.

Cannabinoids in a terpene product. Pure terpenes shouldn't carry cannabinoids. High terpene extracts (HTE) come out of a cannabinoid extraction and aren't standardized, so the cannabinoids they carry cause formulation and compliance problems.

Missing documentation. At minimum, look for cGMP manufacturing, HACCP and allergen statements, plus COAs on every lot.

Vague labels. "Live resin terpenes" and "full spectrum" can mean almost anything. Ask the supplier exactly what the words mean for that bottle.

A huge CDT catalog from a young company. Keeping hundreds of cannabis cultivars in production takes years and real infrastructure. A brand-new supplier with an enormous "CDT" list may be selling a little hemp terpene mixed with mostly botanicals.

Green Flags: Quality and Compliance

Quality and compliance documentation alongside laboratory terpene production equipment

Look for terpenes that are:

  • Free of cannabinoids, which matters for the EU, Japan and other international markets
  • Free of vitamin E acetate, MCT, PEG and PG
  • Documented for residual solvents, pesticides and heavy metals
  • Food grade, GRAS and USP where it applies
  • Made under FDA cGMP, 21 CFR 111 and 21 CFR 117 for supplements and food

Lab Effects holds cGMP certification under both 21 CFR 117 and 21 CFR 111, plus ISO 9001 and HACCP, across a large scope of operation. We keep all of them with annual audits from an ANAB-accredited certification body. We don't know of another terpene supplier that holds that combination.

Every terpene we have ever sold has been 100% naturally derived from cannabis or botanical sources, and our catalog complies with California law as currently written. We do not make or sell synthetic terpenes, and we don't add odorizers, flavorants or sulfur compounds to push a nose.

How To Buy Terpenes from Lab Effects

We can't speak for anyone else, so here's how it works with us.

Shop the catalog. Browse all products, pick a size and add to cart. Every product has its specs, a Certificate of Analysis and a Safety Data Sheet. If you're not sure which profile fits, start with a sample kit.

Talk to a real person. Our team handles formulation questions and custom blends. Wholesale buyers get a dedicated account manager, with pricing and promotions that aren't on the website. Contact us to set up an account.

Fix the rest of the formula. Our Terp Essentials are built for vape formulations, all natural and food grade:

  • The CUT® thins thick distillate and extracts and stops crystallization, without changing flavor.
  • The BASE™ is a flavorless carrier oil made from terpenes, esters and lipids. It can make up most of a formulation without touching aroma or taste.
  • The THICK™ raises viscosity to stop leaky carts, and gives very potent actives more body in the cartridge.
  • The CLEAR™ is an antioxidant that slows oil darkening.

None of them contain PG, VG, PEG, MCT, vitamin E acetate, squalene or squalane. After the 2019 vitamin E acetate crisis, every ingredient in a cart gets looked at, and these give you a clean way to fix crashing distillate, thick oil or leaky hardware.

Get it shipped. We process orders within 24 hours, or the next business day on weekends, and ship with multiple carriers across the US. Internationally we ship to more than 40 countries, including Canada, Australia and across Europe, with custom import documentation.
